How to Choose Color to Dye Your Hair

Of course if you are in the hands of a skilled hairstylist and you trust them, you can basically leave yourself in their hands and let them do whatever they want.

However, in most cases you want to have at least some sort of say in what is being done with your hair, in particular what color you dye your hair.

Even just a shade lighter or darker can make a huge difference in the overall look, and so you want to be very careful when choosing a hair color and make sure that it is going to be right for you and leave you with the most pleasing appearance.

The Basic Laws of Hair Color

To avoid mistakes, you will want to start off by learning about the basic laws of hair color. More importantly than anything is your skin color and tone.

Basically everyone falls into one of three categories: pink undertones, olive undertones, and dark undertones.

If you burn easily when you are in the sun you probably have pink undertones, if you tan easily and rarely burn you have olive or golden undertones, and if you are dark skinned to begin with you have dark undertones.

Now that you have figured this out, you can best decide which colors are going to look best on you. Dark skinned people are rarely going to look right in lighter shades such as blonde and strawberry blonde, and should stick to darker hues that are going to better compliment their skin tone.

Olive skinned people need to be careful, because if they go super dark they can end up looking washed out, but if they go with too orange a color their skin can look ruddy.

If you have olive skin you may want to try gold highlights or a warm chocolate or chestnut brown in your hair.

Lighter skinned people can get away with a lot more, and usually suit blonde and brunette tones. Usually only those with pink undertones can get away with light ash blonde hair, the lightest possible color of hair.

Then again the very fair skinned people with pink undertones often look great with jet black hair as well, so they can be very versatile with their look.

These tips will be sure to help you out the next time you are heading out to the stylist, or even if you are dying your own hair at home.

When in doubt, if you are not ready to take a risk and trust in your stylist's hands, you can always just use a semi-permanent color which will wash out after a few weeks.

Then if you decide that you do like it, once the semi-permanent has washed out you can permanently dye it this color.

Have fun!
